Healthy weightBMI is a quick screen from height and weight; it doesn’t distinguish muscle from fat, so treat it as one signal among many.

Understanding your BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screen that relates your weight to your height. It's calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, and it sorts adults into underweight, healthy-weight, overweight, and obese ranges.
BMI is quick and useful at a population level, but it doesn't measure body fat directly or distinguish muscle from fat — a muscular athlete can register as 'overweight'. Treat it as one data point alongside waist measurement, how your clothes fit, and how you feel.
These calculators provide general estimates for healthy adults and aren’t medical advice. They aren’t intended for children, during pregnancy, or for clinical use — speak to a healthcare professional for personalised guidance.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI range?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is classed as obese.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a useful screening tool but not a diagnosis. It doesn't account for muscle mass, body-fat distribution, age, or ethnicity, so it can misclassify very muscular or older individuals.
Does BMI apply to everyone?
Standard BMI categories are for adults. They aren't appropriate for children, pregnant people, or elite athletes, who need different assessments.
